How to connect a server to WWCN? | |
---|---|
Or: the tale of the four challenges | |
Familiarize yourself with the conditions | |
Not every piece of hardware is suited to run the WWCN server software. Not every network connection is suited to guarantee timely transportation of WWCN data. And not every person has the right attitude to handle annoying users. Therefore, the Network Administration Group has setup a list of conditions you and your hardware must fulfill. This is your first challenge. If you pass, you can work on your other three challenges. | |
Get the software | |
Currently, the software is only available on the WWCN Download pages. The file "src.latest.tar.gz" will be the most recent version. Unzip and untar it, and compile it on your system. This will be your second challenge. | |
Apply for a server ID | |
In order to join the network, you will have to formally apply for becoming a WWCN administrator. To do this, you will have to fill out a form that can be found on this site. | |
When granted, you will be given a unique server ID that you will have to enter into the configuration file. Within a while, a query form will apear on this page for you to fill out. We expect a few qualities from server administrators, amongst others: diplomacy, social capabilities, the willingness to cooperate with people who disagree, and tolerance. This will be your third challenge. | |
Obtain connections to other servers | |
You will have to request connections to other servers. Have a look at
the list of servers that are willing to accept connections, and write
to the administrators. If you come to an agreement, you will have to
choose two passwords, and exchange primary IP host names and server ID's
to enter into the configuration file. You will also have to obtain passwords and stuff from at least two Channel Directory Servers (which can be found in the CDS list), so that your server knows what channels are registered. This concludes the four challenges. |
