Administrator rules
Conditions
  • The machine on which the server is to run, must have at least 8Mb main memory available, and 20Mb disk space.
  • In order to compile the software, the OS on your machine needs GNU cc and GNU make
  • The machine on which the server is to run, must be connected to the Internet via a T1 at least (1.5 Mbit/sec), or a E1 (2Mbit/sec); whichever is applicable.
Responsibilities
  • The Message of the Day (motd) has to refer to an e-mail address where abuse reports can be sent to.
  • The administrative information of your server has to be accurate.
  • You must setup connections to at least two near WWCN servers (in your own state or country), if these are available.
  • You must setup connections to at least two far away WWCN servers (outside your state or country) if these are available.
  • You must setup connections to at least two User Directory Servers, as close   networkwise as possible.
  • You must setup connections to at least two Channel Directory Servers, as close networkwise as possible.
  • You are not allowed to modify the server software in a way that compromises the stability of the network, or the privacy of the users.
  • If someone complains to you about abuse by another user (via mail), then you must check if the logs provided make sense and correspond to the logfile of the server, and if there are reasons to believe that the complaint is justified, you have to contact the abuser. This is up to your judgement and social capabilities. You may warn the abuser, warn him again or terminate his account, again up to your judgement. If the abuser disagrees, then you must inform him about his right to complain to the Network Administration Group.
  • If you commit yourself to these duties, then you will have to accept your responsibilities at all times. The fact that you own the machine, pay for the bandwidth or invest time into WWCN does not mean you can treat the users like dirt.
Rights
  • You can limit the amount of incoming and outgoing traffic, thus preventing your bandwidth to be consumed entirely for WWCN traffic. This will mean more lag for your clients, however.
  • You have the right to call yourself WWCN Administrator
In short
The conditions are easy. The duties are heavy. You have not much rights. However, if you are willing and able to take these responsibilities on your shoulders, then there is a very solid foundation to build WWCN on. Together we will make WWCN truly world wide!!
